The Indonesian rupiah fell 0.05 per cent to 13,555 against the US dollar today (Aug 11) to reach its lowest level since July 1998.
The rupiah has fallen nearly 9 per cent so far this year, the second-worst performer in emerging Asia.
The US dollar rose today as China allowed its yuan to fall to the lowest level since 2012, sending other currencies in the region lower against the US dollar.
Meanwhile, Indonesia’s chief economic minister urged the US Federal Reserve to implement its planned interest rate hike as uncertainty over the proposed tightening was pressuring the rupiah.
